WISCONSIN (CIVIC MEDIA) – The Wisconsin Elections Commission has ruled that smaller Wisconsin communities can hand count ballots during elections.

The motion applies to communities with fewer than 7,500 people, and at least one electronic voting machine must be made available to residents with disabilities. The decision, which was passed Tuesday, June 2, stems from a complaint filed last year against the town of Thornapple that challenged the town’s decision to hand count ballots.

The commission voted to dismiss the complaint at the time by a 5-1 decision.
